Politics of India

This post has also been published on an e-magazine called N-zine
It was great to be a part of this lovely magazine as one of the contributors!!
The post is Politics of India

The politics of India has gone down over the years. There's no respect for politicians in front of the people. No one buys what the politicians of which ever party come up with. They are all people of the same pool. The entire political structure of our country is messed up and entry for right deserved people are blocked..barrier to new entrants is the board that is always there. Even the discipline in the House is unmanageable.

According to the report, the cost of per minute spent on parliament when in session is Rs 34,500. The cost of per hour goes to Rs 20. 7 lakh and the cost of the whole day goes to Rs 1.55 crore. There are so many disruptions and if one watches the parliament sessions one will definitely get irritated as watching on whom their money is being spent. The standard of questions in the question hour round has gone down all because of the kind of candidates the parties come up with. The Rajya Sabha tickets are given to people who have been loyal to the party and not that they deserve it.

We are called the next big thing to arrive on the international platform, but we are also a nation where the Central government is put to back foot or is blackmailed to the unethical demands of the allies. The multi party coalition is the culprit here. Its this multi party coalition system that had led to more corruption, regional based petty politics and most important making the central government weak. We are really a unique democracy where the performance of a national party is directly dependent in a regional party.

Take for example the railway ministry...something that seems to be a ministry for the small regional party who helps the national party to form the government. This is wrong as ministry should be given to those people who are capable of handling it. Its like a reward for helping to form the government.

Some regional parties that help more regionalism while some play the caste and communal politics. There are some politicians who consider themselves to be iconic which they are no way near...by making statues. The UP govt had spent 10,000 crore on statues and memorials.

India today needs political stability to send the right signal to the international community.A situation where allies within the ruling coalition continue elbowing the largest party in the Lok Sabha will not help India to be where it wants to be. The government should work with the opposition and vise versa. Its only here we see both on opposite ends no matter how serious the issue is.

Corrupt candidates should not be encouraged to contest elections as the law has to be strict and the party that gives them tickets should also be penalized.There are plenty of MP'S who have a long list of criminal cases. Election Commission should be entrusted with more powers so as to stop all the violations these political party do.

Nice post. Parliamentary system of democracy is the root cause of all problems. What happens when a person want to run as a candidate? He/she has to approach the Party leaders and they should give him/her tickets to run. The leaders select their sons, daughters, nephews, son-in-laws candidates. They get ministership also if that party is in the ruling coalition. Many times they sell the tickets to criminals.

Also, in parliamentary system of democracy, an MP cannot express his views. He has to reflect the view of the leadership. He cannot vote in parliament according to his conscience. He has to follow how the leadership tells him/her to vote. Even if the individual is honest he/she has to obey the leadership. Otherwise, he will be expelled from the party or will not be given the ticket in the next election.

USA is a better example. Here if you want to run as a candidate on behalf of a party, you should contest in primary election (election held to select, by the people, which candidate is the best candidate from the same party). And, those selected candidates from each party will contest the following general elections. The leadership of the party has no say in who will be selected from their party, by the people.

Therefore, these people are not answerable to the leadership in the senate. On many occasions, senators are voting across the party lines.

Plus, this parliamentary system of democracy was designed after the British model. I don’t know why we follow still follow the British. They have a monarch. So, we have to waste our money by having a President.

In my humble opinion, Presidential style of democracy (ala USA) is better.

When the country's public becomes more aware and law abiding and courageous, it will have better leaders. It is a long process. With the size and problems India has, we have made pretty progress post independence. Be optimistic and be a good citizen. We will see a better parliament in our lifetime.

We need leaders who would set an example to the citizens of the country not those who make them lose faith in the entire system...

@Swatantra absolutely we should have!!
@ SG I second your thoughts...a two party system may b the solution of our prb!!

Good post, Nazish. I agree with you that the Election Commission should be given more powers but then somehow one has to ensure that corruption doesn't creep in there as well.
The way I see it theres is one huge problem with politics in India: once a person comes to power, even if they personally are not corrupt, they may be surrounded by corrupt people.
There has to be harsher punishment for corruption and the media has to be very impartial and expose the dirty politicians.

@Karen Thanks a lot!!
@Holy Lama Definitely it will take some time
@Destiny's Child Ya we need leaders like that i guess we need to wait a bit more
@ Panorama Thanks!! Your right i guess the important thing here would b to implement the law...i know corruption is to its very core here in our country and on everything politics is played !!

I read this blog few times but could not understand your point.

What solution are you proposing?

What would you like?

All Indian politicians are corrupt but what options do we have.

If we cannot make parliminetary system work, we cannot make any other system work either.

Very nice, interesting and wonderful post. You have portrayed very nicely about the nasty politics takes place in our country. All politicians are corrupted and if not they get surrounded by the corrupted people. We always think that a politician will do the work but all the promises made by them are totally false. Hope our country gets rid off the corrupted politicians to make better place to live.

Bad politics erodes the taxpayer's money. A democratic country such as ours with over a billion people should stand up and speak out, instead of playing the mute spectator. Each ministry or position should be allocated as per qualification / experience of the person.

The international community seems to to thinks our nation is in coma governed by spineless, greedy politicians.

Agree with you when you say corrupt politicians should not be allowed to contest and EC needs more power.

But then who decides this??

Nazish Rahman said...

@Kiran :)

@ Purba Its we the ppl of this country who decide this by electing the right candidates and using the law to its best !!

Very well said what we need is some rules to regulate who can contest and age for retirement from active politics.
